Water quality in Belgium: can we really trust tap water?

Tap water is part of our daily lives. We drink it, use it for cooking, wash with it, and it runs through our sanitary installations every day. But what is the real quality of the water supplied in Belgium?

In Belgium, water intended for human consumption is checked regularly against the health requirements in force. In Wallonia, information on the quality of supplied water is now centralised in a map tool that lets you consult the data by distribution zone.

Water that meets drinking water standards is considered potable. That does not mean, however, that it has the same characteristics everywhere, nor that it is perfectly suited to every domestic installation.

Water hardness depends mainly on its calcium and magnesium content. Hard water is not necessarily bad for health, but it encourages limescale deposits, especially when the water is heated.

Scale gradually builds up in water heaters, heat exchangers, taps, showers and some household appliances. The most visible signs: white marks, scaled-up taps and equipment that needs more cleaning or maintenance.

Water monitoring also covers many other parameters: nitrates, pesticides, metals, microbiological parameters and certain emerging substances such as PFAS, which are under reinforced regulatory monitoring in Belgium and Wallonia.

Between the public network and your tap, water runs through private pipes and equipment. An analysis is therefore worthwhile when a specific problem is noticed, or before considering a treatment solution.
