Sitting quietly at the end of the line, the UV steriliser reassures with its blue light. But it only protects you if it is maintained. After a dry summer, wells and rainwater tanks will refill over the coming weeks, and the first water through can carry more particles. Here is what the manufacturers say.
A lamp that is on is not a lamp that works
A steriliser lamp does not suddenly burn out: it wears. Its invisible germicidal output falls with hours of use, while the blue glow you can see may remain. Cintropur says so plainly in its documentation: once the service period is over, the blue glow is no longer an indicator that the steriliser is working properly.
Manufacturers give similar benchmarks. Cintropur asks for the lamp in its UV 2100 and 4100 sterilisers to be replaced after one year of operation, or 8,760 hours, and states that effectiveness is no longer guaranteed beyond that. VIQUA and BWT specify replacement after 9,000 hours of continuous operation, about one year. In practice: one lamp a year, on a fixed date, whether it still glows or not. Write the date of the change on the unit.
The quartz sleeve: the window that must stay clean
The lamp never touches the water: it slides into a quartz sleeve that lets UV light through. Over time, limescale, iron or other deposits form a film on the sleeve. That film reduces the amount of UV reaching the water, and therefore the disinfection, even with a new lamp.
Manufacturers recommend removing the sleeve and cleaning it with a mild acid (vinegar or descaler), without abrasives, then rinsing it. If it stays dull, or is scratched or cracked, it must be replaced. Cintropur also advises replacing the quartz every five years, as the sleeve itself deteriorates under the radiation.
Without a pre-filter, UV works blind
UV only disinfects what it reaches, and suspended particles act as a screen. That is why Cintropur always advises pre-filtration and places the steriliser last in the treatment line. Its manual states that the water treated must not be coloured or loaded with suspended matter, iron or limescale.
VIQUA gives guide values for the water entering the unit: iron below 0.3 mg/L, manganese below 0.05 mg/L, turbidity below 1 NTU, hardness below 120 mg/L. Above those levels, pre-treatment is needed. With well water, only an analysis can tell you.
The pre-filter is therefore the first thing to clog, especially when water turns cloudy after heavy rain. For its DUO-UV and TRIO-UV units, Cintropur recommends changing the filter bag at least twice a year.
What to do before winter
Switch off the power before any work: UV-C is dangerous to eyes and skin, and the lamp must never be lit outside the unit. Close the water supply and release the pressure.
Lamp: if it is a year old, or you no longer know when it was fitted, replace it. Hold the new one by its ends without touching the glass; a fingerprint can be removed with alcohol.
Quartz sleeve: clean it with mild acid, rinse, and check that it is intact and the seals are in good condition.
Pre-filter: change the cartridge or bag and rinse the bowl.
Day to day: leave the steriliser on permanently, even when no water is drawn; according to Cintropur, frequent switching on and off shortens lamp life. Only turn it off if you are away for more than a week, to avoid overheating, and let the water run for one minute when you restart it.
What UV does not do
UV disinfects water as it passes through the unit, without adding anything to it. It has no residual effect: it does not protect the pipework downstream and does not remove iron, limescale or nitrates. VIQUA in fact asks for the downstream plumbing to be disinfected after installation, after a lamp or sleeve change, or whenever the unit has been shut down.
For well water used for drinking, a steriliser is no substitute for an analysis. Cintropur itself points out that water is only recognised as drinkable if its chemical parameters have also been checked and found satisfactory.
Our approach
We install and service UV sterilisers and their filtration throughout Belgium. During a service visit we check the whole line: pre-filter, quartz sleeve, lamp, connections and, if needed, disinfection of the downstream pipework.
Prefer to do the maintenance yourself? Our webshop stocks UV lamps for Cintropur sterilisers, the Durlem Ultra V 32 W UV lamp, the BWT UVIO / Pluvio F+UV 16 W UV lamp, quartz sleeves for Cintropur sterilisers, and pre-filter bags and cartridges from Cintropur, Honeywell, Durlem and BWT E1. Not sure which part you need? Call us on +32 4 325 10 02.
Not sure when the lamp was last changed, is the quartz scaled up, or has your well water never been analysed? Ask us for a service visit: we check the whole treatment line and tell you what needs replacing.
