Lifting stations in Belgium: when do you need a pumping station?

Cellar, garage, low-lying building: when water cannot reach the sewer by gravity, it has to be lifted. How does a station work, and how do you size it?

When waste water or rainwater cannot reach the drainage network naturally by gravity, a lifting solution becomes necessary. This is typically the case for cellars, garages, low-lying buildings or plots whose layout does not allow gravity drainage.

What is a lifting station?

A lifting station brings together a tank, one or more pumps, a level detection system, pipework and an electrical control. Water arrives in the tank; when the level reaches a set threshold, the pump starts and discharges the water to a higher point.

Grey water, black water and rainwater: different uses

Identifying the type of water to lift is essential. Grey water comes from basins, showers or household appliances. Black water contains toilet effluent and requires suitable equipment. Rainwater can reach very high flow rates during storms. The choice of pump, tank and control depends directly on the use.

When does lifting become necessary?

When the discharge point is higher than the appliances to drain, when a building is below network level, or when the available slope does not allow sufficient flow. A study of the building and network layout determines whether lifting is really needed.

Sizing: much more than choosing a pump

A station is sized according to the flow to be drained, the head, the length and diameter of the pipe, pressure losses, the nature of the fluid, the usable tank volume, the start frequency and operating conditions. A pump that is too small cannot drain properly; an oversized pump starts too often and wastes energy.

Why plan an alarm and sometimes two pumps?

For high-stakes installations, a high-level alarm signals an abnormal situation before an overflow. Depending on criticality, a two-pump configuration provides redundancy: the pumps alternate, and the second steps in during peak flows or if one fails.

Maintenance: the key to reliability

A lifting station must be maintained. Checks cover the pumps, floats or probes, non-return valves, valves, pipework, control box, alarm and the general state of the tank. With soiled water, accumulated matter can also affect operation. Preventive maintenance reduces the risk of failure and overflow.

What about a power cut?

The risk of a power failure is taken into account at the design stage, especially when the station protects a sensitive area or an exposed building. Depending on the need: alarm, sufficient buffer volume or backup power supply.
