Information taken from official sources and the press, with no legal value. Only the order published by your municipality is binding: check it if in doubt.

What is banned or limited

  • Watering lawns, gardens and plants with tap water
  • Watering vegetable gardens, limited or subject to conditions
  • Cleaning pavements, terraces, façades and roofs
  • Filling swimming pools, ponds and hot tubs
  • Washing vehicles outside car washes

Details of the order

  • Family vegetable gardens: watering by hand (watering can) only, without hose, nozzle or automatic system.
  • Any other recreational, decorative or non-essential use is banned.

Complying with the order and living normally

Tap water remains available for drinking, cooking, washing and hygiene. For everything else, a few adjustments are enough.

Water differently

Use rainwater, early in the morning or in the evening, at the foot of the plants rather than with a sprinkler. Mulch keeps the soil moist; a yellow lawn recovers with the rain.

Keep your vegetable garden

Watering can and rainwater, thick mulch, watering at the foot in the evening: a vegetable garden copes with far less water. Respect the conditions set by the order.

Terraces and pavements

Broom and brush rather than a hose or pressure washer; the big clean-up can wait.

Pool and pond

Do not empty your pool: cover it to limit evaporation and look after the existing water. Filling will wait until the order is lifted.

A clean car

Use a car wash, which recycles part of its water, or wait until the order is lifted.

Good everyday habits

Harvest rainwater

Connected to toilets, washing machine and garden, a rainwater tank covers a large share of a household's needs without drawing on the mains.

Hunt down leaks

Read the meter in the evening and again in the morning without using water: if it has moved, there is a leak. A running toilet wastes dozens of litres a day.

Full appliances

Run the washing machine and dishwasher full, on eco programmes; a short shower rather than a bath.

Private well

Before relying on it more, have the pump and water quality checked: a low water table makes the pump run dry and concentrates iron or manganese.
